Mr Lim Kwong Ling has been a leading light in the field of photography through his work as President of Photo-Art Association of Singapore, an organisation which he founded in 1965. Besides being an accomplished artist, Mr Lim has also devoted himself to the promotion of exchange between photographers from Singapore and China as well as Southeast Asian countries.
新加坡影艺研究会创立于1965年. 身为影艺创始人和会长, 林光霖先生是摄影界一位突出, 而且有影响力的摄影家. 除了是一位造诣高超的艺术家外, 林先生更致力献身于促进我国和中国以及东南亚各国摄影家的交流.

The exhibition which will feature about 100 of Mr Lim's best pictures, will give viewers a good idea of the development of his art over a span of more than thirty years. The organisers of the exhibition have also published a book to document these works.
林光霖个人影展将展出林先生近百幅佳作, 它将让参观者观赏到林先生跨越三十年的艺术进程. 组办单位也把这些佳作受入一本影集.

President of Photo-Art Association of Singapore, Mr Lim Kwong Ling, has been an avid photographer for more then thirty years. While many of his works are excellent pieces of art worthy for collection, his efforts in promoting the art form and fostering new photographers are also notable.

Besides being the 7th president of the Federation of Asian Photographic Art, he was also a major driving force behind the establishment of the Singapore Photo-Art Festival and International Photo Fair. These events have a positive role to play in promoting interaction and mutual understanding among photographers in Asia.

A man of letters, Mr Lim is unique in this artistic pursuit. He brings into focus intensity of human emotions with spontaneity, depth and moral messages. Many of his works have been highly acclaimed and won prizes in international competitions.

I am glad to hear that Mr Lim is presenting a solo exhibition, as well as publishing his collection of major works at the end of this year. May I wish him every success.

A premiere photographer and art promoter of Singapore, Lim Kwong Ling is equally popular among photographers in China. He has visited the country on more than eight occasions, and has arranged for many of his artists to visit the island republic.
林光霖先生是新加坡著名摄影艺术家和摄影活动家., 又是中国 摄影界的老朋友, 曾八次访问中国, 也曾多次邀请中国摄影家访问新加坡, 为中新两国的影艺交流作出了积极贡献. 现在林先生从他30多年创作的大量作品中精选近百幅佳作结集出版, 我以十分欣喜的心情表示衷心的祝贺!

I am delighted to hear that Mr Lim has decided to publish a collection of nearly one hundred of his major works created during the past thirty years. May I wish him every success in this endeavor.

His flair for the art, and his excellent organising skills, have earned him the reputation of being an outstanding photography promoter, both in Singapore and Asia. During the past thirty years, he has single mindedly pursued excellence in the art form, and has created many invaluable pieces that are worthy of collection.
在沙龙摄影盛行的东南亚地区, 林光霖先生却有独自的艺术主张和艺术追求. 他主张摄影作品应追求内涵与形式的完美统一, 反对重形式轻内容的创作倾向. 因此, 他坚持走纪实摄影的创作道路, 把境头对准社会生活, 采用抓拍方法捕捉生活中各种人物的真情实感, 热情讴歌真善美. 他的作品逐步形成了"朴实无华, 真实自然"的艺术风格.

Despite the popularity of salon photography in South East Asia, Mr Lim has steadfastly championed his own artistic ideals. He believes that the techniques and subject matter of any piece of art should be perfectly matched. It is, therefore, lopsided if only technicality of it is emphasized. He, as a result, is more a realist who focuses his cameras on people, capturing their emotions, be it joy, love, hatred or grief. His works, therefore, are distinctly 'simple and natural'.
The unsophisticated works in this collection are reflective of both his artistic style and his character as a person. He is known as a sincere and modest man, but unrelenting in the pursuit of excellence. I am sure this collection of his works will prove a refreshing addition to the photography literature of Asia.

影集收入的作品, 有一种浑厚质朴的美, 人们从中可以看到林光霖先生的人品和艺品. 他为人诚厚谦和, 虚怀若谷; 对影艺执著追求, 精益求精. 我相信, 林光霖影集的出版, 犹如一股清新的春风吹进亚洲影坛, 给人以启迪, 给人以美感.

I first fell in love with the arts of photography some thirty years ago when I was still a young man. Since then, camera has become my dearest friend who constantly helps me capturing fascinating moments that I love, or simply that interest me. I am glad camera has transformed these moments into permanent pictures that I cherish.
打从年轻开始, 我就喜欢上摄影这门艺术. 转眼间, 已有三十多年光景. 在这半个甲子的日子里, 相机经常伴着我, 把我喜欢的, 有所感触的人事物景, 显影出来, 永恒地留下. 摄影不只陶冶乐我的生活, 也把我和我国以及其他国家的摄影家联系起来. 除乐向他们学习到技术和修养外, 飞越国度的真挚友谊, 是从事摄影活动给我带来的巨大受获. 也正是这些挚友的支持, 我大胆地出版了这本个人影集.

Photography has certainly enriched my life. Through camera, I have also made friends when photographers all over the world --- from whom I have learned a great deal not only about photographic techniques, but also ways of life. The bonds that cross borders are, to me, the most treasureable part of my life experience. It is for theses friends' encouragement and support that I have finally plucked up the courage to come out with this album.
比起郎静山, 吴印咸和已故叶畅芬等大师们超过六十年献身摄影艺术工作和取得的成就, 我三十年留下的光和影, 相形见拙. 但考到新加坡摄影界在出版个人影册方面, 比起中港台等地是显得那么贫时, 我希望这本影集的出版, 进一步起着抛砖引玉的作用.

Of course, my thirty years' involvement in photography can in no way be put on par with the life-long pursuit of such eminent photographers as Master Chin-San Long, Wu Yinxian and the late Ye Changfen whose career in photography has each spanned over sixty years. However, in consideration of the fact that publication of personal albums has, to a great extent, been overlooked in Singapore in comparison with what we see in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, I hope this collection will, as the Chinese saying goes, server as the 'brick' that attracts the 'jades'.

The album is of great significance to myself and my family. I would, nevertheless, like to see it as a new beginning, rather than an end to my artistic pursuit.
当然, 这本影集的出版, 对我和我至爱的家人, 有着重大的纪念意义. 但它决不是我摄影创作的终点, 而是另一个起点.

In other words, I have this collection published more for gaining experience than anything else. There are altogether 97 works in this album. Would all masters, friends and fellow-photographers, please give me your most critical comments on them so that I can further improve myself.
我是抱这着学习的态度来出版这本影集. 影集收集了作品共百帧, 也算是我三十年来的作业簿吧, 请各位同道前辈, 批评指教.

Almost throughout Kwong Ling's past thirty years as a photographer, he held key positions in the Photo-Art Association of Singapore. Acclaimed as a premiere photographers in Singapore, he impresses, both in and out of Singapore, not only with his photographic techniques and achievements, but also his character - being broad minded, above broad, friendly and helpful.
光霖兄涉足摄影已有30年, 参与影艺研究会领导工作也近30年. 由于为人光明磊落, 胸襟广阔, 尊敬别人, 善于提拔后进, 配合其摄影技艺及就,这些年来, 他获得国内外摄影界的推崇, 是我国著明摄影家之一.

Having known Kwong Ling for many years, Keng Lian first met him some 30 years ago and Liang Being more than 10 years - we are in a position to say something about his works, style and personality. He is a conscientious worker, and excels in his role as a leader of the Association - both 'charging to the forefront' and building up solid 'logistics base for the rearguards'. No doubt adept in deploying the members to accomplish various tasks, Kwong Ling, however, feels equally at ease with running errands when called for. His emphasis on promoting unity among the members has helped creating a healthy working environment within his committee members, and the Association's developing into a major photographic society in Singapore with a membership of about three thousand.
我们和光霖兄结识, 各别是三十年(庆联)和十多年(良明). 大家一起参与学会的工作, 对光霖兄的人品, 作风和性格, 有深入的了解. 在会务工作上, 他干劲十足, 可以冲向最前线, 也懂得坚守后防; 善于调兵遣将, 也经常先身士卒. 他重视内部团结, 群策群力. 这种领导作风使影艺理事会多年来合作融洽, 在共同努力下, 影艺研究会得以迅速发展成为一个拥有二,三千名会员的摄影学会, 为推广我国摄影文化艺术, 作出了实际的贡献.

Artistically, he has devoted himself to the pursuit of excellence. His style in photography - his only hobby besides reading - is distinctively simple. It is not meant purely to please. While tackling diverse subject matters, they are, however, always close to life. Through his camera, he depicts the spontaneity, virtue and beauty of life and visits.
光霖兄对摄影是挚诚的. 除了看书, 摄影是他的唯一嗜好. 他极力追求纯朴的摄影作风, 决不哗宠取众. 作品提材广阔, 生活气息浓厚. 通过摄影艺术,他写出人物的真善美.

Besides being a member of the panels of judges for various local an international photography competitions, Kwong Ling's contribution to the photographic art include the following:

• Toured Asia in 1980.Chaired the 7th Congress of the Federational Asian Photographic Art in Singapore in the same year. The event was participated by delegations from places like Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines. Kwong Ling's contribution to photography does not stop at his function as a leading member of the Photo-Art Association of Singapore, as many see it. In fact, he has also directly and indirectly promoted photography in Singapore and led the country in its interaction with the rest of the world in this aspect. In his speeches both at home and abroad, however, he always attributes all achievements in photography to the country. From this, we may also conclude that he is a patriotic photographer.
一些人只看到光霖兄在影艺研究会所作出的贡献. 其实, 他付出的, 是直接和间接地促进新加坡的摄影文化活动与交流. 这些贡献是属于新加坡的. 在国内外的致词和演讲中, 他经常提起新加坡的成就, 处处以国家声誉为前题. 他是一位爱国的摄影家.

The publication of this collection of Kwong Ling's works marks another milestones of his artistic pursuit. In conjunction with this a solo exhibition of Kwong Ling will be held from 25th till 28th December 92 at the Empress Museum by the Photo-Art Association of Singapore, as our yet another to promote the photographic art in Singapore.

Sometime ago, I received a trunk call from a friend in Singapore, informing me that he would come to China soon. That must be his seventh visit to our country as fast as I can remember.

前不久的一个晚上, 笔者接到新加坡摄影界一位友人打来的长途电话, 说他即将来中国. 在我记忆中, 这将是这位新加坡友人第7次访华了.

He was none but the great friend of our photographers and people, Mr Lim Kwong Ling, who has been described as a 'designer and architect who has forged a bridge that links up the photography circles in China and Singapore'. This is not at all an overstatement. The trip of our photographer delegation headed by veteran photographer Mr Wu Yinxian to Singapore in August 1985, that helped enhance mutual understanding between photographers in the two countries, was made possible under his meticulous arrangements. The event also marked the visit of the first Chinese photographer delegation to Singapore. Through this, and the subsequent visit of Singaporean photographer delegation to China led by Mr Lim himself in early 1986, the friendship between the photographers of the two countries was solidly forged. The importance of this pioneering effort of Mr Lim can never be overemphasized.

这位对中国摄影界和中国人民怀有深厚的真挚感情的新加坡友人, 就是被中国摄影界誉为"中新两国摄影界友谊桥的设计师和建筑师"的林光霖先生. 林光霖荣获这个美誉是当之无愧的. 1985年8月, 以中国著名老摄影家吴印咸为团长的中国摄影家代表团, 就是在林光霖的邀请和周到安排下前往新加坡进行友好访问和影艺交流的, 这是访问新加坡的第一个中国摄影家代表团. 通过这个代表团的访问和林光霖率领的新加坡摄影家代表团1986年初的回访, 中新两国摄影界之间架起了一座牢固的友谊桥梁. 从此, 中新两国摄影界开始了频繁的交往和艺术交流. 在这方面, 林光霖做出了开拓的贡献.

In fact, Lim Kwong Ling's contributions do not stop at this. He is also a promoter and champion of photographic arts in Singapore and Asia. Besides being a member of the photography Advisory Committee for the Ministry of Community Development in Singapore, he is also President of the Photo Art Association of Singapore and President of Asean Photographers' Association. Throughout the years, he has been traveling around the region unrelentingly promoting the art form.
其实, 林光霖的贡献并不限于促进中新两国摄影界的友好合作和艺术交流, 他还是新加坡和亚洲影艺活动的出色组织和领导者之一. 他现任新加坡政府社会发展部摄影咨询委员会委员, 新加坡影艺研究会会长和亚细安(东盟)摄影家协会会长, 还应聘为中国华侨摄影学会顾问和 东方国际摄影艺术基金会顾问. 为推动亚洲的影艺活动, 他常年风尘朴朴地在许多亚洲国家和地区穿梭访问, 乐此不疲.

Lim Kwong Ling, 57, is a Singaporean Chinese of Fujian origin. It has been his single minded pursuit of excellence in the arts, and his devotion to the promotion of the art form, that earned him the reputation as a premiere photographer and photography promoter in Asia. "I would rather spend all the time, energy and money that I can mange to stay with all my friends in pursuing excellence in photography together," he said. His artistic attainment, coupled with his devotion, endeared him to photographers in Singapore. He has been Vice President or President of the Photo Art Association of Singapore for 19 years since 1972. It is unusual for overseas photographers to hold such high offices for so long a time.

林光霖是在新加坡出生的华人, 现年57岁, 祖籍中国福建省莆田县. 他成为当今亚洲负有盛名的摄影艺术家和影艺活动的组织者, 是他对摄影艺术不倦追求和为影艺活动忘我献身的结果, 他常说:"我愿意牺牲自己的时间, 精力和金钱, 和大家一起进行摄影创作活动." 正是他在摄影艺术上精深造诣和积极推动影艺活动的献身精神, 赢得了新加坡影友的信赖, 从1972年起, 他连续19年先后担任新加坡影艺研究会副会长, 会长. 一位摄影家能连续担任这麽长时间的领导职务, 这在海外摄影界也算一个罕见的记录了.

Mr Lim has been a avid photographer since his days as a young man. Then he also participated in drama and music, and enjoyed reading and writing. During the past thirty years, his focus, however, has been on photography alone. Extensive involvement in the arts, nevertheless, enabled him to excel, and many of this works won prizes in international competitions. A sharp and clear picture taken by him, entitled 'solidary', was awarded gold prizes in competitions held in Britain and West Germany. In 1970 and 1971, he accumulated enough credits in various competitions, both local and overseas, to be awarded 'Photo Art Cup' by Photo Art Association of Singapore.
在青年时代就异常酷爱艺术的林光霖, 早年热衷于搞戏剧和音乐, 对文学也有深厚兴趣, 后来转向摄影创作, 至今已有30个春秋. 较高的艺术素养使他在较短的时间在摄影界崭露头角, 他的作品在国内的摄影沙龙中多次获奖, 他的一幅画面清新的题为<孤单>的佳作曾在英国和联邦德国的摄影比赛中荣获金牌. 1970年和1971年, 他连续两年以参加海内外沙龙和影艺研究会全年季赛的最高总积分荣获影艺研究会会长颁发的"影艺杯".

Lim Kwong Ling, being aggressive in his pursuit of the arts, was unsatisfied with the aestheticism associated with the salon photography. He wants to inject realism into his works. "Purely pursuing outward spendous may lead one's works becoming superficial and lack impact on the viewers. Only when one go right to the heart and be reflective of human's life, that one can create works of moral and depth." As to the promotion of photography, Photo Art Association of Singapore, under his direction, has been active in exploring new ways of expression. To break away from the constraints imposed by 'international photography salon', they organized solo, group or theme exhibitions of outstanding photographers of personality. These exhibitions, in a way, also provide avenues for Singaporean photographers to prove their worth.
林光霖是一位富有创新精神的人. 他在摄影创作道路上探索了一段时间后, 对摄影沙龙中普遍存在的唯美主义创作倾向产生了怀疑, 就毅然决然地走上写实主义的创作道路, 创作了不少富有时代感和生活气息的作品. 他认为:"单纯追求华美的外在表现, 容易使作品流于浅薄, 不能给人留下深刻的印象. 只有深入社会生活, 才能产生寓意深刻, 蕴涵丰富的作品", 在影艺活动方面, 他领导的新加坡影艺研究会不断进行探索创新, 力求突破"国际摄影沙龙"的局限性, 举办一些富有特色和个人影展, 数人联展和转题影展, 为新加坡摄影家开辟了施展才华的新天地.

Since 1950s, photography of Singapore has been widely noted throughout the world, while in the past thirty years, they have produced several photographers of international standing. Mr Lim, however, stresses the importance of fostering a new generation of photographers, who should be equipped with good technique and theories, to sustain the effort of attaining new artistic heights. He, therefore, guided the Photo Art Association of Singapore into conducting courses, such as those for the beginners, or others for portrait taking and commercial or practical photography. These programmes also enable the society to become one of the most active and influential photography organizations in Singapore.
新加坡的摄影艺术从50年代起就饮誉国际影坛, 30多年来涌现了不少国际知名摄影家. 但是林光霖认为要把新加坡的摄影艺术推向新的高峰, 必须有计划地培养一大批年富力强的有技术有理论的高层次摄影人才, 在他倡导下, 新加坡影艺研究会除定期开展丰富多彩的创作活动之外, 还设有"基础摄影课程", "灯光人像摄影课程","商业摄影课程" 和 "实用幻灯片课程". 从而使该会成为新加坡最有活力, 最有影响的4大摄影团之一.

Organising international photography events, are another major effort to raise the standard of photography in Singapore. The Photo Art Association of Singapore, under Mr Lim's direction, was able to organize one major international event each year, while every other year, a 'Photo Art Festival' is held. The activities help the society to foster close links with photography bodies in many countries around the world. The photographic equipment exhibitions held during the photography festivals have been so successful that the feature has been ranked among the top three photographic equipment exhibitions in the world.
开展国际性影艺交流活动, 也是提高新加坡的摄影艺术水平的重要一环. 他领导的新加坡影艺研究会每年都搞一次重大的国际影艺交流活动, 即隔年举办一届"影艺节"一届国际影展, 同世界10个国家地区的摄影团体建立了良好的合作关系. 现在该会在"影艺节"期间举办的国际摄影器材博览会, 已成为世界第3大摄影器材博览会了.

Mr Lim, as President of Photo Art Association of Singapore, hosted the 7th Convention of Asia Photography Association in June 1980. In 1984, he invited photographers from Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia to participate in the "Seminar of Asean Photographers", which resulted in the formation of the Asean Photographers' Association. As requested, he became the association's first president. The impact of these tow important events is vivid. They have enhanced mutual understanding and co-operation among Asian photography societies, and raised the standing of Singapore in the international photography scene. In them, of course, are also Mr Lim's devotion to photography.
1980年6月, 林光霖以新加坡影艺研究会会长, 亚洲影艺协会会长的身份在新加坡主持召开了亚洲影艺协会第7届大会. 1984年, 又邀请菲律宾, 泰国, 马来西亚和印尼等国的摄影家到新加坡举办"亚细安(东盟)摄影家研讨会", 会后成立了亚细安(东盟)摄影家协会, 他众望所归, 当选为首任会长. 这两次中大的亚洲影艺活动, 促进了亚洲摄影界的团结合作和艺术交流, 提高了新加坡在国际影坛的地位和声望, 这里面真不知宁聚着林光霖多少辛劳的心血呵!
